[The woodchuck (Marmota monax) has been increasingly used as an experimental animal because of its ability to hibernate and tolerate low body temperatures. It may also serve as a model for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease studies.] Permanent outdoor housing was constructed from chain link fencing sections on a concrete base. Metal poultry nest boxes were attached to 1 side of the cage. Each enclosure accommodated up to 10 woodchucks and provided adequate shelter and exercise space. This housing system was inexpensive to construct and efficient to service.
