During 1973 and the 1st 6 months of 1974, 7 cases of neonatal jaundice were observed in the author's hospital. Milks of 2 of the 7 mothers gave a positive Nile blue test [DSA 37, 422] and the blood content of non-esterified bilirubin in the 2 infants decreased when breast feeding was interrupted or discontinued. In a 3rd infant with intensive jaundice whose mother's milk gave a negative Nile blue test, blood bilirubin content became normal 5 days after it had been weaned. In the remaining 4 infants, which continued on the breast, jaundice improved progressively and disappeared within 5 wk.
