The role of gluconeogenesis in the pathogenesis of different diabetic conditions, mainly insulin-deficient diabetes and diabetes accompanied by hyperglycemic adiposis, in humans, mice and rats is reviewed. The action mechanism of biguanides in blocking gluconeogenesis is discussed.
