An outbreak of epistaxis in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis)

An outbreak of epistaxis lasting 38 days, accompanied by severe sneezing, during which all the adult monkeys in a room were affected, is described. Nasal swabs yielded a Streptococcus sp. from one animal and Staphylococcus aureus from another. Serum samples were negative for influenza antibodies (A/Eng/42/72 and B/HK/8/73). A blood sample from one monkey showed relative leucocytosis. Histological examination of one monkey revealed extensive necrotizing rhinitis, and colonies of bacteria resembling Neisseria were seen; culture of the respiratory tract yielded streptococci, Staph. aureus, coliforms and N. catarrhalis. No viruses, fungi or parasites were detected. The possible aetiology is discussed.
