The toxicity of benzoic acid in the cat was investigated under experimental conditions. The maximum permissible single dose was found to be 0.45 g. per kg. bodyweight, and the highest level that could safely be fed daily was 0-2 g. per kg. Overdosage resulted in a syndrome characterised by marked hyperaesthesia and in some cases aggression. The compound has both an acute and a cumulative effect.
