Benzoic acid poisoning in the cat

The events and signs associated with benzoic acid intoxication in cats since 1970 are summarized and 2 recent cases are reported, in one of which 0.1% benzoic acid was present in the meat eaten before symptoms developed. It is concluded that, despite general agreement that benzoic acid should be replaced by sorbic acid, 0.1 to 0.2%, as a preservative in the manufacture of pet foods, exceptions may still arise and the possibility of benzoic acid intoxication cannot be excluded in cats showing lack of coordination, muscular tremors, apparent blindness and hyperaesthesia.
