Small, intensely fluorescent cells in the autonomic ganglion of the cat

The small, intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells in the inferior mesenteric ganglion of the cat were studied by Falck and Hillarp's fluorescence histochemical method and by EM. SIF cells, which were counted in serial 10-.mu.m sections in 24 ganglia, occurred in practically every section. The total number of small cells in 1 ganglion ranged from 406-2567 (mean 948). These cells, which displayed intense greenish yellow to yellow fluorescence, were usually rounded and had a non-fluorescent nucleus. In the individual sections they were distributed either singly or in small or large groups. After transection of the preganglionic or postganglionic fibers and after the injection of reserpine, changes were observed in the fluorescence intensity of the small cells in the ganglion.
