Out of 173 cases of tumor of the parotid gland, in 64 % the tumor appeared between the ages of 30 and 60; in 9 % of the cases the tumor appeared under the age of 20. Histologically 54 % were mixed tumors and 9 % papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum. The incidence of malignancy in our series was 23 %, but reached 55 70 in the under 20 age group. In all benign cases a partial parotidectomy (a resection of the superficial lobe) was performed, while a subtotal resection was performed for deeply situated lesions. The nerve was dissected and preserved in all cases and in no case did permanent damage occur. Facial nerve weakness was noted in 15 % of cases and subsided within 6 weeks to 6 months. A permanent damage of the mandibular branch was noted in 8 cases. In malignant cases a total parotidectomy was performed, with division of the facial nerve in 4 of them.
