Studies of the epidemiology of Japanese encephalitis virus in the summers of 1964-74 in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, showed that there was a gradual decrease in the numbers of the vector, Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, breeding and a gradual retardation of the date of appearance of the adults over the 11 years. At the same time, there was a decline in the encephalitis infection rates in pigs and man. The sum of air temperatures was found to be positively correlated with mosquito density. Insecticide spraying was not correlated with mosquito breeding.
