Dynamics of changes in the concentration of copper and zinc in the bodies of rats with parasitemia

Changes in the Cu-Zn balance in rat tissues and organs (blood, serum, liver, spleen) were studied in rats infected with Trypanosoma lewisi. Significant quantitative changes in trace element levels were noted; levels were reduced during the incubation period of the disease and gradually increased in the later phases. A definite balance between the 2 elements was preserved despite the quantitative changes. These results indicate the importance of considering the status of the Cu-Zn balance when administering these trace elements in order to increase nonspecific resistance and prevent secondary infection.
