Spiroergometric studies on gas exchange conditions in rest, physical load and restitution in humans determined the maximum O2 consumption at reduced total cardiac workability as major index of the initial phase of cardiac insufficiency. Based on the O2 pulse of the load, restitution coefficient and O2 consumption per 1 kg body wt, work effectiveness was in direct correlation to external cardiac output.
