The reported latency of the NAD-dependent homoserine dehydrogenase [EC 1.1.1.3] of S. marcescens Sa-3 is due to the presence of NADH oxidizing enzymes in crude preparations, and the reported inhibitory effect of boiled cell-free extracts on the dehydrogenase is due to an activation of the contaminating NADH oxidizing enzymes. The latency of the NAD-dependent homoserine dehydrogenase is probably of no significance in the regulation of the biosynthesis of threonine, methionine and isoleucine in this bacterium.
