Rats were given reserpine (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or saline for 5 days. Brain slices were incubated with 0.5 .mu. Ci of 14C-glycine for 1 h, and then tested for radioactivity. Uptake of glycine was significantly reduced in reserpinized animals, presumably due to changes in the neuronal membrane permeability. Reserpine may behave in vitro as a local anesthetic in altering the membrane permeability.
