ECG examinations of 58 cholera patients in an algid state after 4-6 h of rehydration therapy revealed 38 patients were in an aqueous-electrolytic state corresponding to shock. The number of heart contractions/min was 121 .+-. 5.8 before therapy and 84 .+-. 18 after 6 h of therapy. The impairment of homeostasis during decompensated dehydration was accompanied by pulmonary hypertension and functional overload of the right heart. Immediate i.v. injection of a large quantity of standard isotonic solution under the control of the ECG eliminated the hemoconcentration and acidosis and restored hemodynamics. ECG criteria for hypertension of the lesser circle, overloading of the right heart and pulmonary hypertension were nonspecific for cholera patients.
