Adjuvant hormone therapy to radiation treatment for cervical cancer

A large dose of estrogen was administered with radiotherapy to 147 patients with cervical cancer. Five year survical rate in stage III patients was significantly better in the estrogen group than in the control group. In stages I, II and IV the prognosis was favorable in the estrogen group, but the difference was not significant. Survival curves showed the same pattern in estrogen and control groups. Early metastases and early expiration in the estrogen group were not observed from analysis of the survival curves. The influence of age on therapeutic results of radiation was discussed in relation to endogeneous estrogen levels. Estrogen administration combined with radiation was supposed to enhance radiosensitivity of cervical cancer and should be applied to the treatment of radioresistant tumors or recurrent cervical cancer.
