In safety tests, both the whole virus vaccine (WVV) and the HA vaccine (HAV) inoculated as 1.0 ml doses into the upper neck of yearlings and 3-year olds (10 animals in each vaccine group) did not produce any of the usually observed side reactions, i.e., fever, systemic or local reactions. During the post-vaccination period, increased antibody production was obtained in every case. The booster effect was optimum when primary immunization was performed with two inoculations 4 weeks apart, followed by re-inoculation at six months and one year after initial immunization. Results, similar to or better than those obtained with the WVV were observed in the groups inoculated with the ether-treated haemagglutinin vaccine.
