A dachshund bitch vaccinated against rabies with a live vaccine based on the Flury LEP strain contracted the disease nine months later after being severely bitten on the head by a badger. It is concluded that the vaccination gave insufficient immunity, especially in view of the fact that the diseased badger carries large amounts of virus and that a bite in the region of the head is more likely to give rise to infection. This case confirmed previous observations that rabies vaccination using live vaccine is not always completely effective.
