Office hysteroscopy and suction curettage: a two-year experience at Bayamon Ob-Gyn office

Since the beginning of the 80's, hysteroscopy has proven to be a powerful diagnostic tool in visualizing the cervical canal and the uterine cavity. The direct inspection of the uterine cavity and the guided biopsy has provided better results than the traditional blind D & C 1-2. In 1985 office hysteroscopy with suction curettage was suggested, as the method of choice for evaluating abnormal uterine bleeding instead of hospital hysteroscopy, 3 but it has not gained wide acceptance. With new endoscopes that require no cervical dilatation, it is now possible to perform the procedure under local anesthesia and in an outpatient office facility 4. In addition to patient demand for prompt diagnostic and short stay, financial strategy motivates managed care organizations to offer this treatment to their patients. This study will show the diagnostic accuracy, success rate, and the cost of office hysteroscopy with suction curettage at our group practice.
