Influence of somatostatine on plasma level of calcitonin in the calf and the swine

Two groups, each of four calves (two male and two female), were given i/v doses of calcium glutamate to stimulate calcitonin release. One group then received an i/v somatostatin injection, the control group receiving saline. Plasma calcitonin levels in the jugular vein were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results showed that Ca, P and Mg levels were not affected by the somatostatin injection and no significant difference between treated and control animals was observed in glucose, insulin or growth hormone levels. A second experiment using five male pigs aged three months and one control produced similar results, plasma calcitonin levels being unaffected.
