Plasma membrane fractions were isolated from calf myocardium and calf thymus, and tests were conducted to establish the effects of organic tin compounds upon activities of magnesium, sodium and potassium ATPases. Magnesium ATPase of the myocardium plasma membrane fraction was inhibited by tricyclohexyl-tin-chloride (50% enzyme inhibition, I50 = 6.3 x 10-8 mol/litre) and by dibutyl-tin-dichloride (I50 = 2.9 x 10-7 mol/litre) as well as by other dialkyl-tin compounds. Magnesium ATPase of thymus, on the other hand, could be inhibited by 50% only by tricyclohexyl-tin-chloride. The sodium and potassium ATPases of both plasma membrane fractions could be slightly inhibited by tricyclohexyl-tin-chloride but were not at all inhibited by dialkyl-tin compounds. It is concluded that inhibition of plasma membrane ATPases is not a cause of toxic action of dialkyl-tin compounds on thymus. Disorders of plasma membrane functions due to inhibition of magnesium ATPase might be involved in cytotoxic effects of triaryl-tin compounds.
