A comparative EM and biochemical study of macrophages from the connective-tissue capsules arising around diffusion chambers containing Salmonella typhi or Shigella dysenteriae showed that the products of S. typhi have an inhibitory effect on origin and number of microtubules accompanied by a decrease in macrophage enzyme activity; the products of S. dysenteriae cause a considerable increase in the number of arising microtubules accompanied by macrophage enzyme activation. Cytoplasmatic microtubules may be definite functional forms of certain protein-enzyme cell systems.
