10,451 tubal sterilizations, performed at the Government Erskine Hospital, Madurai from 1956-1972 were examined in order to study the changing trends regarding the type and time (in relation to pregnancy or delivery) of sterilizations. The 17-year period was divided into 3 phases: 1956-1963, 1964-1970, and 1971-1972. During the 1st phase the number of sterilizations were about 100/year. The emphasis during this period was on puerperal sterilizations (93%). During the 2nd phase the average number of Sterilizations increased to 1000/year. Interval tubectomies became popular during the 2nd phase and over 95 percent were done vaginally. In the first 2 phases only .5 percent of all sterilizations followed therapeutic abortion. By 1971-1972 this percentage had jumped to 16.4 percent. In the last phase over 2000 ster ilizations were performed per year, 44 percent puerperal, 40 percent nonpuerperal and 16 percent with abortion. In the latter part of 1972 the number of sterilizations following induced abortions are exceeding the number of puerperal and nonpuerperal tubectomies.
