The high infectivity of the ornithosis agent is a major obstacle in the procurement of hemagglutinin [HA] for the hemagglutination inhibition test. UV light, high temperature (56-60.degree. C) and .beta.-propiolactone [BPL] were used for preparation of noninfectious ornithosis HA. Only BPL was effective. A highly effective HA for diagnostic use was obtained by BPL treatment of Chlamydia infected chick embryos. It was active and stable upon storage.
