Drayon, a desiccant containing 38.12% amorphous silica gel, 1.88% ammonium fluorosilicate and 1% pyrethrum, was applied to surfaces at 2.65 g/m2. After contact with the treated surfaces for 10-15 min, males, females and fifth-instar nymphs of Rhodnius prolixus Stal were unable to feed, and all died within 24 h; but after contact for 2-9 min, 1.8-6.8% were able to feed and 2.3-12.1% were not killed. When males, females and nymphs had crawled over 200-250 cm of treated surface in 88-126 s, 9.5-32.8% were able to feed immediately afterwards. It is concluded that drayon does not provide complete protection against the bite of R. prolixus.
