Mucous membrane anesthesia with a 10 per cent xylocaine liquid spray

In order to avoid the unpleasant swab-sticks in anaesthetizing the nose for antrum lavage the author has, for the past 20 months, been using a 10 % Lidocaine (lignocaine) aerosol (»Xylocain sprayvätska», manufactured by AB ASTRA, Södertälje, Sweden). The method is very convenient, and produces excellent anaesthesia within 3 minutes. The quantity of drug used can be determined fairly exactly, and 3/20 of the maximum intravenous dose is sufficient for puncture of the maxillary sinus. The lethal dose of lidocaine is about 9 times greater when the drug is applied to the mucous membrane of the nose than when it is injected intravenously. There is, therefore, a wide margin of safety.
