Syndactyly in Holstein-Friesian, Hereford, and crossbred Chianina cattle

During 1973-74, 9 neonatal calves (Holstein-Friesian, Hereford, Chiana X HF, Chiana X Aberdeen-Angus, Chiana X (AA X HF), and Chiana X (AA X Charolais) with syndactyly of 1 or more feet were observed. The 2 Chiana bulls had a common paternal grandsire; 1 bull sired 2, and the other sired 4 of the calves. The karyotype of the 6 Chiana crossbred calves was normal. The similarity in synosteotic pattern and occurrence suggested that the same allele for syndactyly was involved in all the breeds.
