Sprague-Dawley rats weighing about 250 g were intact or underwent resection of a 25-cm segment of ileum or a sham operation. Three months later the mean serosal-to-mucosal concentration ratio of taurocholate in everted sacs of jejunum was about 70% higher for rats with ileum removed than the mean ratio of intact or sham-resected jejunal preparations, indicating that the jejunum develops increased absorptive capacity for bile salts after loss of the ileum.
