In 26 adult patients with intestinal tuberculosis, absorption tests and bile salt studies (cholate concentration, bile salt concentration, glycine:taurine ratio and TLC were performed. Steatorrhea was present in .apprx. 70% of patients while vitamin B12 and D-xylose malabsoportion were present in 79% and 58% of patients, respectively. The mean total bile salt and cholate concentration were significantly lower in patients with intestinal tuberculosis compared to those in control subjects. In most patients the values were above the critical micellar concentration. The glycine:taurine ratio was significantly higher in patients with intestinal tuberculosis compared to those in control subjects.
