In a collaborative study with 9 laboratories the method of Fritz et al. (NAR 45, 3941) was evaluated; principal modifications were the use of a simplified basal diet low in Fe and measurement of change in Hb instead of final Hb value. The relative biological values, compared with FeSO4 as 100, to change blood Hb of depleted rats were FePO4 6 to 22, mean 11, hydrogen-reduced Fe 15 to 41, 27 and ferric citrate 75 to 125, 96. There was no advantage in measuring change in Hb instead of the final Hb value.
