It is possible that both positive and negative feedback loops regulate granulopoiesis. Colony stimulating factor(s) and granulocyte chalone are probable regulators of the major loops. Understanding the molecular events controlling proliferation and differentiation will give further insight into the pathogenesis of malignant transformation. With purification of the regulators and further definition of their action on normal granulopoietic cells and leukemic cells, a therapeutic role for these factors may be developed.
