Recovery of the acid secreting function and mucopolysaccharide content of the gastric mucous membrane in dogs

Chronic experiments on dogs with gastric antral fistulas established that resection of a considerable part of the stomach body and bottom with greater curvature (tubular resection) is accompanied by a decrease in the gastric acid-secretory function up to 20-33% of the preoperative level in the early postoperative period (1-2 mo. after procedure). A year after the operation a gradual restitution of the gastric secretory function occurred up to 63-89% of the preoperative level. The mechanisms of secretory activity restitution are considered. In the process of gastric acid-secretory function restitution, accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides in glands of the gastric antral section is observed.
