Abnormal formation of rosette (E and EAC) in Hodgkin's disease

Immunocompetence was studied in patients with various types of hilomediastinal lymphadenopathies and data was collected on the composition of lymphocyte subpopulations, specifically the T rosettes. Blood samples of 11 persons with Hodgkin's disease were compared for lymphocyte composition with blood samples of healthy controls. The percentage of rosette E values in the Hodgkin's disease patients was 44-70% (mean value 57.27%), compared with 65-75% in healthy controls (mean value 70.15%). The percentage of lymphocytes forming EAC rosettes varied between 12-57% (mean value 26.81%) in Hodgkin's disease patients and between 15-20% (mean value 16.84%) in healthy controls. Hodgkin's disease is apparently one of the prototypes of human diseases showing a secondary immunological deficiency of T lymphocytes and high values for B lymphocytes. Rosette formation tests may be a valuable method of differential diagnosis and possibly a guide to treatment in Hodgkin's disease.
