Great differences in the length of the lower extremities often arise and develop during childhood, and the correction of such differences in adults is difficult or impossible. Efforts have therefore been made to solve the problem hy regulating bone growth during the period of growth and in this way equalizing the length of the extremities. The ideal would be to correct the difference by treating the extremity which is the site of the pathological changes, i.e. by stimulating the growth of a too short leg or inhibiting the growth of a leg whose growth has been stimulated by pathological processes.
