The effect of lighting period on the growth of broiler chicks

In 3 experiments, broiler chicks were housed to 4 wk of age under red light of 43 lux for the following daily periods: (1) 23.5 or 13 h.; (2) 23.5 or 10 h; (3) 23.5 or 8 h. Each light treatment was applied to 16 groups each of 6 birds. For the 6 experimental groups resp., av. weight gain was 1922, 1935, 2096, 2094, 2060 and 2020 g, food conversion ratio (g feed/g gain) 1.79, 1.76, 1.71, 1.68, 1.74 and 1.71, and total protein efficiency (g weight gain/g protein intake) 2.66, 2.71, 2.78, 2.84, 2.74 and 2.79.
