The microbiological and pharmacokinetic characteristics of amoxicillin, a new broad-spectrum semisynthetic penicillin, are described. As compared with other semisynthetic penicillins, amoxicillin offers important therapeutic advantages related to its pharmacokinetic properties and bioavailability. An almost total absorption was observed in the intestinal tract, absorption not being affected by the presence of food in the stomach. The percent of antibiotic not bound to plasma proteins is among the highest found in these drugs.
