Microbiological aspects of the quality of selected cosmetics

The degree of microbiological comtamination of 187 samples of Polish cosmetics for adults was determined. The cosmetics were obtained from the market. In the study all groups of cosmetics for adults were considered, similarly as various cosmetics producers (state, cooperative, private firms, and firms belonging to Poles living abroad). The total number of mesophilic bacteria over 10 thousand in 1 g was found in 16% of samples, colifrom organisms in 7%, spore-forming anaerobic bacilli in 6.4%, coagulase-positive staphylococci in 3.9%, Escherichia coli in 3.5%, molds over 100/g in 3.2% of samples. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was present in only 2 samples.
