Pelvic examination of the adolescent and more particularly of the preadolescent girl is carried out so infrequently that many physicians are unfamiliar with the normal findings or with satisfactory and practical methods of investigating pediatric gynecologic problems. Since such disturbances are not uncommon, the incorporation of a pelvic examination in the pediatric check-up will frequently prove rewarding. The major gynecologic problems encountered in the preadolescent include the various forms of vaginitis, injuries, congenital anomalies, and abnormal sexual development. Disturbances of the adolescent years are largely concerned with early or delayed appearance of the menarche, menstrual irregularities, and dysmenorrhea.
