The growth of 119 premature infants born between the 25th and 31st weeks of gestation was followed from birth up to age 18 months and changes in bodyweight, length and cranial circumference were compared with standard curves for normal term infants. Study of curves for individuals and for the whole group showed that not only was there a recovery of growth, but values for all 3 indices overtook those of term infants at some point between the theoretical birth date and 3 months later. This was attributed to the higher growth rate of the premature infants from about 1 month old. From these results, modified standard curves applicable to premature infants are presented as a guide to subsequent growth, provided the gestational age at birth is accurately known.
