Treatment of schistosomiasis of the urinary bladder with astiban

A trial was made of Astiban (antimony dimercaptosuccinate) in the treatment of schistosomiasis of the urinary bladder. Doses of 30 to 50 mg/kg body-weight (not exceeding 2.5 g) were given either daily for 15 days, weekly for 5 weeks or bi-weekly for 5 doses. 22 patients out of the 25 were free from the complaint 6 months after treatment; 3 of them had a relapse 8 to 10 months after treatment, but 19 were still free from the infection one year later. Undesirable side-effects affecting the cardiovascular system and alimentary canal were observed.
