This is a discussion of the epidemiology of Trichinella infection in various parts of the world. While world prevalence of the infection is low, constant surveillance of the condition in animals and man is necessary, with appropriate action at the time of an outbreak. It may not be possible to eradicate the infection, but the entry of T. spiralis into the human food chain could be prevented. The authors review, from the literature, the occurrence of trichinelliasis in the USA, Canada, Europe, USSR, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific Islands. The nature and importance of the sylvatic reservoirs in each country are described and discussed.
