Susceptibility of mosquitoes to imported strains of the causative agent of human malaria (survey of the literature)

In this review, tables are given showing the percentage of infectivity in Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say and A. punctipennis (Say) to strains of Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum from Florida, Cuba and Panama, in A. quadrimaculatus and A. freeborni Aitken to those of P. vivax from the Solomon Is. New Guinea, the Mediterranean, Liberia, China, Burma, India, and the Caribbean area, and in the latter species also to a strain from New Britain, and in A. quadrimaculatus and A. albimanus Wied. to strains of P. vivax from Washington, New Guinea and Korea. A. quadrimaculatus, A. freeborni and A. stephensi List. have been shown to be highly susceptible to all imported strains of malarial parasites, but A. atroparvus Van Thiel (maculipennis atroparvus) and A. albimanus are unable to transmit certain strains of the parasites imported from abroad. It is suggested that use of knowledge of this type would contribute to greater precision in forecasting the epidemiological consequences of the introduction of malaria in different parts of the Soviet Union.
