Studies in male and female rats on the direct effects of DES in the diet at 60 and 120 mu g/kg of food and oestradiol at 120 and 240 mu g/kg of food showed that DES impaired growth and reproductive capacity. Oestradiol did not have these effects. It is concluded that low doses of DES have an effect on reproduction, and that this is completely inhibited by doses of between 90 and 100 mu g of DES/kg of food. These results are compared with those obtained in experiments on methods of determining the relay toxicity. The general findings indicate that DES should not be used in animal husbandry.
