A close relationship between the physician and the rehabilitation counselor is essential to the welfare of the patient who it fit to return to some form of employment. Fortunately, these two professions work very closely together. Obviously, the rehabilitation counselor is unqualified to practice medicine, and the physician usually lacks the special training to do vocational guidance. Together, however, they form a powerful team, the combined strength of which reduces the deleterious effects of serious illness and disability. Working together, with the patient as a third member of team and drawing upon other disciplines, as necessary, the physician and the rehabilitation counselor represent one of the best examples of interdisciplinary teamwork.
