The amount of .alpha.-ketoglutarate utilized by the rat liver mitochondria by increasing sodium salicylate concentrations in the incubation medium without Ca, were compared with those in the presence of Ca++. Presence of Ca++ in the incubation medium abolished the stimulatory effect of sodium salicylate on .alpha.-ketoglutarate utilization. This may result from the ability of salicylates to chelate Ca ions. Pyrogen-standard Escherichia coli, in vitro did not show antagonistic action to salicylate or Ca present in the incubation medium.
