Abnormal bone development and lameness associated with secondary copper deficiency in young cattle

Lameness is reported in a group of calves 5-12 months old. It was due to excessive enlargement of the plates of metacarpus and metatartus which was traced to copper deficiency and excessive intake of molybdenum and sulphate. After 60 days treatment with daily s/c injections of 90-180 mg (0.5 mg/kg) of copper glycinate, the lameness was cured and general condition of the calves improved, but the bone enlargements remained unaffected.
