Toxoplasmosis in an adult presenting as paraparesis (a case report)

A 28-year-old woman, 5 months pregnant, was admitted to hospital in Allahabad, India, with a history of pain and tingling sensations in the right leg for 4 years. Laminectomy for compressive paraparesis, supposedly due to tuberculous granulation tissue, was performed. There was vascular granulation tissue in the epidural and subarachnoid space. Biopsy of this tissue showed toxoplasmosis. Postoperatively, the paraplegia became complete and there was no response to a course of sulphadiazine and pyrimethamine. After the birth of a normal child, the mother died of severe post-partum haemorrhage and inanition.
