In three herds with problems of production, increasing the energy content of the diet by providing an ingenious drip feed of molasses appeared to give good results-though there were no controls. It seems that the approach adopted in these herds is more effective, and more attractive to the farmer, than mere disease prevention. Area agricultural advisers and similar experts can play a big part in this type of practice. The most important factors leading to success are: adequate herd records; cooperation between farmer, veterinary surgeon and other advisers; and adequate exchange of information between the three parties.
