During 1977-79, among the 111 calves born in a German Black Pied X Holstein-Friesian herd of 48 dairy cows, 15 (37.5%) of the 40 sired by a certain bull developed hyena disease. The progeny of other bulls were not affected. Genetic analysis gave a simple recessive mode of inheritance with incomplete penetrance. Other factors such as nutrition and viral infections could not be demonstrated.
