Of a group of 202 babies born in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1968, 56 were premature, 35 small for gestational age and 111 of appropriate weight for age. They were examined again when within 1 month of their 4th birthday. Premature children who weighed more than 2500 g at birth were significantly heavier and taller and had greater head circumference at 4 years than controls. Premature children who weighed less than 2500 g at birth weighed significantly less than controls at 4 years. Children who were small for gestational age at birth were significantly shorter and lighter than controls at 4 years.
