Growth hormone levels in normoglycemic and hypoglycemic infants born small for gestational age

Studies were on 46 newborn infants of whom 18 were of birthweight below the 10th percentile appropriate to their gestational age (SGA), 18 were term infants of appropriate weight for age (AGA) and 10 were premature. Two SGA babies became hypoglycaemic; both showed normal growth hormone (GH) values in serum and adequate GH response to arginine and grew satisfactorily for over 2 years. Eleven of 12 SGA babies followed up for 14 to 26 months showed no impairment of linear growth.
